March 6, 2025 – A new global survey has revealed that women are essential to economic growth, but their full participation is being hindered by significant obstacles we are yet to overcome including increased online abuse and the rollback on women’s rights. This latest research, conducted by TEAM LEWIS Foundation in support of HeForShe, underscores the urgent need to protect rights, pursue equality, and prioritize empowerment.
These findings align with UN Women’s theme for this International Women’s Day—For ALL women and girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment. The report outlines key actions that can drive meaningful change and highlights that enhanced protection and increased funding are critical to enabling women’s economic participation.
For the fifth consecutive year, TEAM LEWIS Foundation has conducted research in support of HeForShe. Notably, this is the first time in the history of TEAM LEWIS’ IWD research that gender equality has emerged as one of the top three global concerns, alongside healthcare and climate change. While this marks progress in awareness, the research makes it clear that much work remains to be done.
The study reveals that over 75% of people believe companies should be required to implement workplace policies to empower and support women. Investment in women’s human capital is not just an ethical imperative—it is a business-smart approach to foster innovation, engagement, and long-term success.
Additionally, 74% of people are concerned about the current political climate around the world, with nearly half stating that geopolitical issues have overshadowed progress toward gender equality. These concerns highlight the need for sustained advocacy and commitment to push forward for gender equality, even in the face of global challenges.
Furthermore, sexism and misogyny has long infiltrated online spaces, and concerns about sexist rhetoric on social media remain high. The survey found that over 80% of Gen Z and 76% of Millennials are deeply concerned about the impact of online sexism. Women are calling on men to listen, challenge sexism, and actively stand as allies in addressing this growing issue.
"Despite progress, the pushback on women’s rights requires a united effort to continue advancing gender equality. Rights, equality, and empowerment remain vital to global prosperity. We cannot afford to sit on the sidelines. Gender equality is everyone’s responsibility. 2025 is the year for men and boys to stand alongside women and girls to drive real change."
– Vesna Jaric, Global Head of the HeForShe Initiative
This research sends a clear message: Women can’t protect their rights in isolation. It requires the commitment and action of organizations, governments and male allies. It is in everyone’s interest to build equal and safer world. When women actively participate in the economy, it leads to growth and prosperity.
