Increase representation of women in technical roles and leadership, and promote a culture that enables our journey to achieving gender parity by 2030, through:
1. Clear definitions for technical roles and targets to drive and assess progress;
2. Talent development and succession programmes;
3. Training and awareness activities to encourage dialogue and challenge stereotypes;
4. Regular impact reviews based on metrics and ongoing workforce feedback, to shape our approach;
5. Promotion of and access to STEM careers and education.
"The evidence that gender equality benefits all of us is indisputable – businesses with equal representation of women demonstrably perform better and societies where we all have equal access to opportunity are healthier, safer and can maximise economic potential.
At De Beers, our commitment to gender equality is resolute. In 2020, we set a goal to achieve gender parity across our global business by 2030. We know this is an ambitious target – particularly in the mining sector where representation of women, especially in technical and senior roles, is historically low. But we also know it’s the only way we’ll reach our full potential. As a father to two daughters and a son, I know how important it is that girls are encouraged to pursue STEM subjects just as much as boys are. We must take action to break down gender-related barriers from childhood to adulthood and foster an industry where young women feel empowered to build ambitious and rewarding careers.
As an industry leader, we can also play a powerful role in supporting gender equality outside of our own business, particularly within our host communities. We’ve therefore also set goals to support 10,000 women entrepreneurs and 10,000 women and girls studying STEM in the countries where we operate. We’ve made great progress already, but there’s still much more to do. As a HeForShe Champion on behalf of De Beers Group, I pledge to continue delivering on our commitments to accelerate gender equality, both within our own business and in the communities where we operate."
