In his capacity as a HeForShe champion, President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins has undertaken to promote the HeForShe Alliance and continue to encourage men to stand in solidarity with women. The President in raising awareness of gender issues and of the HeForShe messages, has emphasised that men must have an active role in achieving a more equal world. The President continues to encourage men and boys in Ireland and further afield to embrace the role they play in recognizing gender equality through everyday actions.  A society that views women as lesser citizens; their voices not valued, their rights not respected is not only dysfunctional in a cohesive sense, it is objectionable on every dimension of rights and its failure to recognise the essential dignity of the person.
